About

Welcome

This tool allows users to “replay” what happened in transit service. Users can input search parameters and the tool will 1) replay what happened on a map; 2) get a list of vehicles that were in the area; and 3) get the performance data and any messages sent between the TMC and the vehicle/its operator.

This tool is maintained by the Transit Performance & Technology Team (TPAT) If you have questions or requests for new features, please email staly.chin@sfmta.com and we will get back to you shortly. If you encounter problems or bugs, please submit a bug report here.

Where Is This Data From?

  • All data is recorded via OrbCAD, Muni’s CAD-AVL system. At the start of each service day, operators use a block ID to log vehicles into OrbCAD. OrbCAD tracks which trip each vehicle is on and how well it is performing (is it adherence to its headway, is it on-time), and it records any communications sent between the operator and the TMC.
  • By default, OrbCAD records each vehicle’s location once per minute. GPS data may be up to 15 feet off from the vehicle’s actual location.
  • Vehicles will appear to “bounce” from location to location when playing on the map. This matches how often GPS data is recorded, not how the vehicles were actually moving.

FAQ

  1. Why did I not get any search results?
The most common reason is that the vehicle you were searching for was not in service during the time period you selected. Vehicles must be on to generate GPS data. Double check your vehicle selection and try searching over a longer time period. If you are still having issues, please file a bug report.
  2. Why does it take so long to get search results?
The tool is querying a very large database with millions of records, so it takes time to process each search and visualize results. The more specific your search is, the faster it will be. However, if your searches are taking longer than a few minutes, please file a bug report.
  3. Is there any browser limitations for this tool?
The tool works best in Chrome and Edge. It may work in other browsers, but it is not actively supported.
